In Shia jurisprudence, Khums is one of the most significant “Pillars of Practice” (Furu al-Din). It is a religious obligation that acts as a powerful tool for social welfare, the maintenance of religious institutions, and the support of the descendants of the Prophet (pbuh) who are in need.
Under the guidance of Hujjat-ul-Islam Aga Syed Mohammad Hadi Al-Moosavi Al-Safavi, the administration of Khums is handled with the utmost transparency and Shari’i precision to ensure your spiritual purification translates into community empowerment.
What is Khums?
The word Khums literally means “one-fifth” (20%). It is a tax on the surplus income or “net savings” a person has at the end of their financial year, after all legitimate living expenses for themselves and their dependents have been met.
The Two Parts of Khums
Khums is traditionally divided into two equal shares:
- Sahm al-Imam (Share of the Imam): This half is dedicated to the cause of Islam. It is used for building and maintaining mosques, Islamic schools (Hawzas), hospitals, and the publication of religious literature. In the absence of the 12th Imam (aj), this is handled by the Marja (Grand Mujtahid) or his authorized representative (Wakil), such as Aga Syed Hadi.
- Sahm al-Sadat (Share of the Syeds): This half is specifically reserved for the poor, orphaned, or stranded travelers from the lineage of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) (the Banu Hashim), as they are prohibited from receiving Zakat.
When is it Due?
Khums is calculated once a year on a specific date (your “Khums Year-End”). It is calculated on:
- Savings in bank accounts.
- Unused foodstuffs (grains, oils, etc.) remaining at the end of the year.
- Business inventory and surplus assets.
Why Pay Through the Office of Aga Syed Hadi?
Aga Syed Mohammad Hadi, as the head of the Anjuman Shari’e Shiyan, ensures that Khums funds are utilized locally to strengthen the socio-religious infrastructure of Jammu and Kashmir.
Your Khums contributions fund:
- The AYMEI Schools: Providing quality education to thousands of students across the valley.
- Welfare for the Needy: Supporting widows, orphans, and families in extreme poverty.
- Religious Scholarship: Supporting students of knowledge who preserve our faith and heritage.
How to Calculate and Settle
Calculating Khums can sometimes be complex, especially regarding business assets or properties.
Recommendation: We suggest you consult directly with the scholars at the Imambada, Aaytullah Yousuf, Bemina, or contact the office via agasyedhadi.com support to receive a precise calculation based on your specific financial situation.
Spiritual Purification for Your Wealth
Just as Salat purifies the soul, Khums purifies your earnings. It ensures that the wealth we have been blessed with is shared with the “true owners”—the poor and the cause of Allah
