Understanding the importance of Zakat al-Fitr

Understanding the importance of Zakat al-Fitr (Sadaqah al-Fitr) is essential for every Mu’min as we approach the end of the Holy Month of Ramadan. On behalf of the office of Agha Syed Muhammad Hadi Al-Moosavi Al-Safavi, we provide this detailed guide to help you fulfill this obligatory act of worship correctly according to Shari’i rulings.

What is Zakat al-Fitr?

Zakat al-Fitr is a mandatory religious tax paid by Muslims at the end of Ramadan. It is a beautiful mechanism within Islam designed to ensure that even the most underprivileged members of our community can join in the festivities of Eid-ul-Fitr without the burden of hunger.

Who Must Pay?

According to Shia jurisprudence, it is obligatory (Wajib) upon every individual who is:

  1. Baligh (Reached the age of puberty).
  2. Aqil (Sane).
  3. Ghani (Financially stable—meaning they possess the means to support themselves and their family for a year, or have a steady manual/professional income).

A person must pay on behalf of themselves and all their dependents (including children, guests who arrive before sunset on the eve of Eid, and domestic help).

The Amount and Commodity

The quantity required per person is one Sa’a, which is approximately 3 kilograms (6.6 lbs) of a staple food item common in your region, such as wheat, barley, dates, raisins, or rice.

For the year 1445 AH (2024), the rates as announced for our region are:

  • Kashmiri Rice: Rs. 150 per person.
  • Punjabi Rice: Rs. 120 per person.

While the physical grain can be given, it is more common and often more practical for the recipient to give the monetary equivalent of these 3kg of grain.

When to Pay?

The time for Zakat al-Fitr starts on the night of Eid (Chand Raat) and must be set aside or paid before the Eid Prayer. If one is not offering the Eid prayer, the deadline is the time of Dhuhr (noon) on the day of Eid-ul-Fitr.

Where Does Your Money Go?

The Zakat al-Fitr must be given to the Mustahiq (the deserving poor). Priority should be given to:

  1. Needy relatives (who are not your direct dependents).
  2. Needy neighbors.
  3. Local people of knowledge and piety who are in need.

How to Pay Online

To facilitate the community, the Anjuman Shari’e Shiyan has provided dedicated accounts to ensure your Zakat reaches those in need promptly. It is vital to distinguish between Syed and Non-Syed funds, as Shari’a stipulates that Zakat from a non-Syed cannot be given to a Syed.
